Bond raised in attempted Westmont child abduction

A DuPage County judge has increased the bond amount for a 42-year-old Romeoville man charged with child abduction in connection with an incident outside a Westmont apartment complex in August.

Peter V. Spino posted 10 percent of a $200,000 bond and was ordered to wear a location-monitoring device while free and awaiting trial, according to court records.

Spino was indicted by a grand jury Thursday. He's accused of trying to lure an 8-year-old girl into his car on Aug. 10.

Authorities said Spino was seen by a number of residents in the apartment complex driving around for nearly an hour. An elderly woman who lives at the complex told police that Spino first approached her and asked “if she wanted to make some money,” authorities said. Witnesses then reported that Spino drove around placing signs in the area and approaching young women and girls who ran away from him, law enforcement officials said.

Spino then approached a young girl and asked her to get inside his car to help him find a little boy, authorities said. However, the girl's mother was nearby and kept the little girl away. Authorities said a man on a bike saw the confrontation and chased after Spino, who fled. Westmont police were called and caught up with Spino who was subsequently identified by a number of witnesses, law enforcement officials said.

Spino is next slated to be in court on Monday.
