Scouting Stevenson at Antioch
Stevenson (8-0, 6-0) at Antioch (7-1, 5-1)
When: 7:30 p.m., today
Last week: Stevenson def. Libertyville, 35-21; Antioch def. Round Lake, 48-0.
Skinny: It might be "big division" versus "small division," but this game also features two of the best teams in Lake County. "They're (Class) 8A and we're 5A, but anytime you've got an 8-0 team going against a 7-1 team in the final game of the regular season, that's pretty fun," Antioch coach Brian Glashagel said. "If you look at the numbers over the years, Prairie Division teams beat Lake Division teams only 20 percent of the time. But I've got to think that teams like us and Vernon Hills (7-1) aren't a great draw for the big-side teams this year. There's a very good chance that the teams Stevenson faces in the first and second rounds of the playoffs won't be as good as us."-Stevenson is looking to put the wraps on its fifth undefeated regular season in school history. The Patriots ran the table in 1995, 1996 2005 and 2009. Last year's run ended with a second-round playoff loss at Mt. Carmel. "Stevenson is the only undefeated team in Class 8A right now," Glashagel said. "They are a very, very good team, very solid. They are solid in every aspect of the game. They make plays when they need to, they have a lot of weapons and they don't make mistakes. I think (first-year coach) Bill McNamara has taken an already excellent program and made it even better."-Offensively, Stevenson has relied on a balanced attack all season. Quarterback Kevin Earl and top receiver Stephen Salata connected seven times for 111 yards and a touchdown last week against Libertyville. Meanwhile, running back Joe Cassata rolled up 191 rushing yards and 4 touchdowns-Defensively, the Patriots are giving up about 13 points per game. They'll be tested by an Antioch offense that averages 37.6 points per game on the strength of a run-oriented offense that features seniors Vinnie Holm and Sam Greene. "We've been playing well ever since our loss to Vernon Hills," Glashagel said of his team's Week 5 defeat, its only blemish of the season. "We're averaging 42 points per game since then, we haven't turned the ball over once since then, and we've forced a ton of turnovers, too."
