Montini picks off Wheaton Academy
When you intercept five passes in a game, you're probably going to win.
When you intercept five passes in a half, you're probably going to win big.
Montini won big, cruising to a 55-0 victory against visiting Wheaton Academy (5-3) on Friday in a Suburban Christian Conference crossover game.
“Our defense really stepped it up, said senior middle linebacker Alex Walters, who had the third of the Montini interceptions. “Our DBs, linebackers, everybody did great this week. We had a good week defensively in preparation, so we came out strong.
Doug Diedrick got the Broncos started when he picked off a Wheaton Academy pass on the third play from scrimmage. Two plays later sophomore Joseph Borsellino took a screen pass, broke a couple of tackles and went 27 yards for a touchdown.
“Bottom line, when you're playing against a team like Montini, a state powerhouse, if you turn the ball over even once, you're putting yourself in the hole, Warriors coach Ben Wilson said. “I thought actually our defense played well, better than we did last week against IC. We forced (the Broncos) to punt a couple of times. Last year when we played them we didn't even force them to punt. So I was proud of the way our defense played.
“Our offense, we'd never seen a defense like that, and I hope we never see a defense like that again. I was very impressed.
J.R. Campise, Zech Tredencik and Tom Desmond also got interceptions for Montini (6-2).
“I thought we really did a great job disguising coverage, Montini coach Chris Andriano said. “And it ended up he threw into some of the coverages. And we had a couple of tipped balls that we made plays on. We made some very athletic plays on a couple of those.
The Broncos took a 38-0 lead into halftime when quarterback Matt Westerkamp found cousin Jordan Westerkamp for a 50-yard touchdown pass. The two connected again on the second play of the second half, this time for 66 yards down the right sideline. Matt Westerkamp, his night done after that, finished with 253 yards passing, 163 of them to his cousin. They connected on three of Montini's four TD passes, and Matt Westerkamp ran for another.
“They're pretty good, Walters said. “That Westerkamp-to-Westerkamp connection, they're pretty good. We'll see how it does against Marmion (next week).
Walters doesn't see the Westerkamps connect much, but he hears about them a lot.
“I know we're going to score points, Walters said. “I'm on extra points, so I just run out there when I hear touchdown.
