Scouting Streamwood at Larkin
Streamwood (2-5, 0-4) at Larkin (2-5, 0-4)
When: today at 7:30 p.m. at Memorial Field
Last year: Larkin 47, Streamwood 6
Last week: St. Charles North 42, Larkin 14; Geneva 48, Streamwood 7
Outlook: The Sabres and Royals are playing for pride after each was eliminated from postseason consideration due to losses last week. Larkin, which celebrates homecoming this week, has owned this series of late. The Royals have won 7 straight against Streamwood. The Sabres' last win in the series was a 22-13 victory in 2003. The winner could be the team that adjusts best with new personnel since both teams are banged up. Streamwood running back Alex Morrow may remain sidelined. Not only will the offense miss the junior's 750 yards rushing and 7 touchdowns for the second straight week, it might also miss the receiving ability of senior Nick Pryor, who coach Cal Cummins called “questionable. Pryor leads the Sabres with 22 receptions for 352 yards and 3 touchdowns. On Wednesday, Cummins called Morrow “day to day. The Royals have been fighting the injury bug for weeks, particularly on defense. However, two players who continue to thrive are junior quarterback Kyle Newquist (82 of 146, 1,227 yards, 8 TD, 7 int.) and senior receiver Trevor Whitehead (58 rec., 973 yards, 5 TD). Whitehead is on the cusp of two records one a family mark, the other a school record. Trevor needs 64 yards to surpass his older brother Bryan, now an assistant coach at Larkin, for Whitehead family supremacy. He needs 104 yards to break the Larkin single-season receiving record of 1,076 yards, set by Nick Bee in 2007. The Royals are taking a nothing-to-lose approach to their final 2 games. “It's homecoming and the last hurrah for our seniors at home, Larkin coach Mike Scianna said. “Both teams are evenly matched and both have a couple of wins. I'm sure both teams will be thinking, ‘Let's get after this.' We don't have any wrinkles left and we don't have much left in the barrel because of the injuries, but if we can get to that 3-win mark with a chance at a fourth win next week, that would be a great season.
