Goodell wants labor deal to get done soon

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, in town for league meetings, stopped by Halas Hall Monday, and discussed the current state of labor negotiations, which could result in a lockout next season.

“Everyone wants football next year, Goodell said. “That's what our objective is, to make sure we get an agreement that works for the players, works for the clubs and most importantly keeps our great game strong. We're all working towards it.

But the rhetoric, posturing and rumor-mongering have many players fearful that a lockout is imminent.

“I don't focus much on the rhetoric, Goodell said. “I focus on trying to get something done.

Unfortunately, it's the lack of progress that has players expecting the worst.

“We continue to meet, and we're continuing to address the issues, and we're all going to work hard to make sure we get it done sooner rather than later, Goodell said. “I keep saying I think the sooner it gets done the better. I think the longer it goes the harder it gets.

With TV ratings at an all-time high, the optimistic speculation is that there is too much at stake for the two sides to kill the golden goose.

“There is a lot at stake, and I think in some ways that is a benefit, Goodell said, “because I think people will understand the importance of getting it done, and I know the ownership is very intent on working to get something resolved and addressed, and I believe the players are in the same position.

Goodell also discussed allegations that Vikings quarterback Brett Favre, when he was with the Jets in 2008, sent lewd text messages and photos to former team employee Jenn Sterger.

“The first thing you want to do is find out the facts, and that's what we're trying to do, the commissioner said. “Then once we determine those facts, we determine what the next step is from there ... if any.
