Geneva too much for Streamwood
Geneva started the season with two consecutive losses, but the Vikings have hit their stride in reeling off five consecutive victories.
Geneva found its rhythm early on Friday in strolling to a 48-7 victory and spoiling Streamwood's homecoming at Millennium Field.
Geneva (5-2, 5-0) secured a share of the Upstate Eight River Division title with its victory.
"We're usually very consistent every year, my coaching staff does a great job of staying consistent with their demeanor," said Geneva coach Rob Wicinski of the Vikings attack. "The kids just gravitate toward that, and by the sixth or seventh game we're usually playing our best ball."
Geneva has averaged 37.4 points during its five game winning streak and junior quarterback Matt Williams had the Viking humming on Friday.
Williams completed 10-of-12 passes for 250 yards, including 2 touchdowns; the 6-foot-2 junior also rushed for 45 yards and scored a pair of touchdowns on 1 yard runs in directing a potent Viking attack.
"We work hard in practice every week," said Williams of the Vikings' offense, which finished with 439 total yards. "We keep saying we haven't played our best game yet, and I still believe we haven't. We have the key players to get there."
The Vikings' defense was just as impressive limiting a short-handed Streamwood team to 44 total yards in the first half in jumping out to a commanding 31-0 halftime advantage.
Senior Andrew Mariotti propelled the Vikings attack pressuring Streamwood quarterback Dalton Lundeen (9-for-29, 60 yards) including an interception.
"Coach always says we have to strive to do our best," said Mariotti of the Vikings defense that only gave up a late score. "That's what we've been trying to do."
Ben Moore added a pair of field goals for Geneva including a 32 yarder that gave the Vikings an early 3-0 lead.
Williams added a 1-yard plunge to stake Geneva to a 10-0 lead entering the second quarter.
The Vikings then erupted for 21 points in the second quarter, with Connor Quinn (14 carries for 80 yards) scoring on a 7 yard run and a 55 yard reception from Williams.
Russ Acton also added a 12-yard scoring catch to aid the Viking first half attack.
Streamwood (2-5, 0-4) was not only missing leading rusher Alex Morrow, but the Sabres were also without starting tackle Jon Olmo and starting wide receiver and defensive back Nick Pryor.
"All of a sudden you have three critical people out of the game," said Streamwood coach Cal Cummins. "Against a quality team it was a rude awakening."
Williams added a 1-yard scoring run and Moore kicked his second field goal to push the Vikings lead to 41-0 entering the final quarter.
Steve Sandoval scored the Sabres' only touchdown on a 4-yard run late in the fourth quarter, but Grant Hudson returned the ensuing kickoff 80 yards to push the Vikings' lead back to 41 points.
