400 more suburban workers likely to hit jobless rolls

Nearly 400 suburban workers are expected to be unemployed in coming months as a half-dozen companies in Elk Grove Village, Schaumburg and elsewhere are planning layoffs or have already closed, according to documents from the state.

Chicago Packaging Co. and Quality Color Graphics Inc., both at 1100 Kirk St. in Elk Grove Village, closed in late September, affecting 114 workers, according to the state. Attempts to reach company officials were not successful.

In addition, Quad/Graphics Inc., a commercial printing firm at 120 E. Wiley Road in Schaumburg, said it plans to close due to a restructuring and will start laying off about 60 workers starting in November, according to the state. Company officials did not return calls.

Also, Key Wester Fish and Pasta House of Illinois in Naperville, owned by Portillo's, said 106 workers, including 43 part-timers, were affected when it closed about a month ago. Of the group, 14 later found jobs at other Portillo restaurants. a company spokeswoman said. Low sales, increased costs and the recession led to the restaurant's closure, owner Dick Portillo told the Daily Herald last month.

The Kane County Health Department in Aurora also plans to eliminate 62 positions by Nov. 8, according to state documents. The Daily Herald has reported since August that the cutbacks were imminent.

Also, Harrington, Moran Barksdale Inc., a marketing consulting firm at 8600 W. Bryn Mawr Ave. in Chicago, plans to lay off 51 workers by mid-November due to a lost contract, the state said.
