Daily Herald wins two Chicago Journalists Association awards
The Daily Herald won two first-place awards in the 71st annual Chicago Journalists Association contest.
Staff photographer Rick West won the Photography award for photos he snapped of Marmion's Mark Peters' game-saving catch at the outfield wall in a 7-6 victory over Burlington Central in a June 3 sectional semifinal in DeKalb.
Daily Herald staff members Ted Cox, Dann Gire, Jim Slusher, Elisabeth Mistretta, Christy Gutowski, Madhu Krishnamurthy, Deborah Donovan, Ashok Selvam and Ginny Lee won the Spot News award for their Sept. 17-18, 2009 coverage of Robert Maday's crime spree.
Maday overpowered his guards and handcuffed them, terrorized two women and stole their cars, robbed a bank and lead police on a two-day manhunt that climaxed with a chase and crash of a stolen car and his arrest.
The awards were presented during the annual dinner of the Chicago Journalists Association Friday at the Holiday Inn Chicago Mart Plaza in Chicago.
The association was formerly known as the Chicago Press Veterans Association, whose founders first met as reporters covering the World's Columbian Exposition in 1893.
The association offers scholarships for area high school and college students through its nonprofit Chicago Journalists Association Charitable Fund.
