Scouting Benet at Carmel
Benet Academy (3-2, 0-2) at Carmel Catholic (5-0, 3-0)
When: 7:30 p.m., today
Last week: Benet def. Glenbard South, 35-14; Carmel def. Marist, 20-16.
Skinny: Trailing in the fourth quarter at Marist, Carmel used a 99-yard drive "99½ yards,"coach Andy Bitto noted to keep its perfect season intact, but the victory came with a cost. RB Matt Maher hurt his knee, and Bitto said the junior will be lost 4-6 weeks. The Corsairs were already minus RB Michael Panico (501 rushing yds., 16.2 avg., 6 TDs), who missed the game with a shoulder injury. Panico is day-to-day, but the Corsairs will be cautious with him, knowing they need the speedy back for the long haul. FB Jordan Kos rushed for 208 yards and a TD against Marist and has 691 rushing yards on the season. With Maher out tonight, and maybe Panico, junior Brian Brennan will get more work. He did against Marist and responded, scoring the go-ahead TD from 20 yards out with 1:22 left and finishing with 82 yards on just 11 carries. Brennan, who plays safety on defense, also had an interception, as did his sophomore brother Sean. Bitto noted that both Brennans alertly and wisely took a knee near the goal line to secure possession after each of their interceptions. "They're smart players," Bitto said. ... In its nonconference, homecoming win over Glenbard South, Benet got 195 yards and 2 TDs on 22 carries from 5-6 RB E.J. Howe. ... Under first-year coach Pat New, the Redwings are seeking their first playoff berth since 2006. "From what I've seen on film," Bitto said, "it looks like they're playing harder than last year."
