Island Lake pair denies hiding fugitive
A man and a woman from Island Lake denied Thursday they lied to police about the location of a fugitive while officers waited outside their apartment for 90 minutes.
Marjorie Mortier, 38, and Kristoffer Olson, 24, face up to four years in prison if convicted of obstruction of justice and concealing a fugitive.
Lake County Assistant State's Attorney Reginald Matthews said police were looking for Anthony Mazur, 22, on a warrant accusing him of violating his parole on a 2006 burglary conviction.
On June 11, Matthews said, police went to a friend of Mazur's residence in Island Lake to arrest him, but Mazur jumped off a balcony and fled.
They tracked Mazur to the apartment in the 28000 block of Oak Street that was occupied by Mortier and Olson, knocked on the door and asked to be allowed inside, Matthews said.
Police said Mortier and Olson shouted through a window that Mazur was not there and refused to let them in for 90 minutes before opening the door.
Once inside, police located Mazur in the attic of the apartment, but he crashed through a window and jumped off the roof of the building.
Police took Mazur into custody after he hit the ground, then arrested Mortier and Olson for impeding their search.
Circuit Judge Fred Foreman scheduled a trial of the case for Nov. 8 and ordered Mortier to appear in court Oct. 20 and told Olson to come back Oct. 21.
