Oilers waive goalie; Khabibulin still in camp
EDMONTON, Alberta -- The Edmonton Oilers have waived defenseman Sheldon Souray and goalie Martin Gerber.
If none of the other 29 teams put in a claim for either player by Friday at 11 a.m., the Oilers can send the veterans to Oklahoma City of the AHL. They could also put them on re-entry waivers, where any team putting in a claim would only be responsible for half of the salary -- with Edmonton paying the rest.
Souray has two years remaining a contract that pays him $5.4 million annually, and Gerber is on a one-year deal signed this summer under which he will earn $500,000 if he's in the NHL or $200,000 in the AHL.
The 34-year-old Souray has been waiting for a trade after a falling out with the organization. He had four goals, nine assists and 65 penalty minutes in 37 games with the Oilers last season. He wasn't invited to training camp and has been working out on his own while the team tries to find somewhere else for him to play.
Gerber, 35, spent last season with Atlant Moscow of the Russian-based KHL and was unable to win a spot with Edmonton. He is 111-78-21 with a 2.65 goals-against average and a .910 save percentage in 226 career NHL games with Anaheim, Carolina, Ottawa and Toronto.
Nikolai Khabibulin, Jeff Deslauriers and Devan Dubnyk are the goalies still in camp with the Oilers.
Also, the Oilers assigned forward Colin McDonald and defensemen Taylor Chorney, Jeff Petry and Alex Plante to Oklahoma City.
