Bickell OK with being left off Cup
Some might argue Bryan Bickell's name deserves to be on the Stanley Cup, but the fact of the matter is it's not despite the left winger appearing in four playoff games and 16 more games during the regular season for the Blackhawks in 2009-10.
The NHL has hard rules when it comes to which players get their name on the Cup, which are appearing in at least one game in the Stanley Cup Finals or 41 regular season games.
"It just makes you hungry to do it again," said Bickell, who did get a ring and his one day with the Cup. "If it was on there it's kind of like a freebie, needless to say, but to be here in the playoffs and play a couple games I sure felt like I was part of it. Hopefully we can bring it back again."
The Cup returned to Chicago engraved with only one glitch: Kris Versteeg's name was spelled "Vertseeg." The error was quickly corrected.
"I may never be one of the biggest names in the game, but now it'll go down in history as one of the mis-spells on the Stanley Cup, so I'll take it," Versteeg told the Toronto Star.
Versteeg is at least the sixth player to have his named engraved wrong on the Stanley Cup. It also happened to Jacques Plante, Bob Gainey, Adam Deadmarsh and Manny Legace.
Ring's the thing: The Hawks received their Stanley Cup rings at a private party Wednesday night that included former teammates Kris Versteeg and Adam Burish.
"We haven't seen a couple of those guys in a while," Patrick Sharp said. "Things happened so quickly here in the summer so it was going to be nice to catch up and talk about last year."
Dustin Byfuglien, Andrew Ladd, Brent Sopel and Ben Eager were denied permission to attend by the Atlanta Thrahers because they had a preseason game scheduled. So did Toronto, but Versteeg got the OK to miss it.
Hawks coach Joel Quenneville said he planned to wear his ring at least once.
"I don't like to wear a lot of jewelry, but you have to wear it at least once," Quenneville said.
Line dancing: While there's no guarantee Joel Quenneville's lines will look this way next week when the season begins, here's how they were at Wednesday's practice: Jonathan Toews-Marian Hossa-Tomas Kopecky; Patrick Sharp-Patrick Kane-Bryan Bickell; Dave Bolland-Fernando Pisani-Jeremy Morin; Jake Dowell-Troy Brouwer-Jack Skille; Ryan Potulny-Viktor Stalberg-Kyle Beach.
Tip-ins: Marty Turco starts in goal tonight at St. Louis and will play the whole game. ... Corey Crawford was back at practice Thursday after missing a few days with a lower body injury. ... There are 31 players left in camp, including forwards Morin, Beach, Igor Makarov and Ben Smith, defensemen Nick Leddy, Brian Connelly and Jassen Cullimore and goalies Alec Richards and Hannu Toivonen.
