Quenneville not happy with loss at Pittsburgh
Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville wanted to use Tuesday night's game against Pittsburgh as an opportunity to do some last-minute evaluating.
A lackluster performance in a 4-1 loss to the Penguins didn't sit well with Quenneville and could make some roster decisions easier.
"It wasn't a very good game for us," Quenneville said. "I didn't like our game at all. All night long, our passing was off, our puck support wasn't there and our puck-possession game wasn't what we traditionally see. It was tough."
Did anyone impress the coach?
"It's a shortlist tonight, so I don't want to mention anybody," Quenneville said.
Jack Skille, Fernando Pisani and Ryan Potulny, who played so well in Saturday's win over Detroit, were minus-2 each.
Viktor Stalberg, who has done little so far in the preseason, had 1 shot on goal in 14 minutes. Rookie Jeremy Morin was minus-1 and played only 11 minutes. Defenseman Nick Leddy got a lot of ice time, more than 20 minutes, and was minus-1.
Quenneville didn't bring many veterans. Patrick Kane, Brent Seabrook, Brian Campbell, Niklas Hjalmarsson, Dave Bolland and Troy Brouwer were in the lineup but didn't get much done. Campbell and Hjalmarsson were minus-2.
The Hawks were outshot 39-22 with rookie Kyle Beach scoring the only goal.
Evgeni Malkin, Dustin Jeffrey, Nick Johnson and Mark Letestu scored for the Penguins, who didn't use Sidney Crosby. The Hawks fell to 1-3 in the preseason, while the Penguins improved to 4-0.
Both of the Penguins' third-period goals went in off Blackhawks defenseman Brent Seabrook.
Alec Richards played the first two periods in goal for the Hawks and allowed 2 goals. Hannu Toivonen played the third period.
• The Hawks are to receive their Stanley Cup rings at a private ceremony Wednesday night. Every player was invited, but only Kris Versteeg will attend among those who have departed.
