Waubonsie just gets by new 204 rival Metea

Waubonsie Valley's kid brother on the District 204 block gave the Warriors quite a scare.

Backup quarterback Matt Schapen led a go-ahead scoring drive in the third quarter capped off by a Eric Josupait 1-yard touchdown run, and Waubonsie held on to beat first-year varsity program Metea Valley 21-20 on Friday in Aurora.

Schapen completed 13 of 20 passes for 175 yards. He also ran in a 2-yard score in the first quarter after Devon Morgan blocked a punt and recovered it at the Metea 3.

Morgan also scored on a 10-yard touchdown run for Waubonsie (4-1, 3-0 Upstate Eight River).

Tre'Sean Mackey's 28-yard touchdown run with 10:26 left in the third quarter broke a halftime tie, giving Metea Valley (1-4, 0-3) a 20-14 lead. But a low snap on the extra point resulted in a failed conversion.

Josupait's touchdown and the extra point pushed Waubonsie ahead 21-20 with 1:48 left in the third.

Mackey, who ran for 105 yards on 17 carries, earlier ran in a touchdown from 5 yards out, a score set up by a 65-yard Mackey burst.
