WHS Jazz Band named a national winner

The Wheeling High School Jazz Band 1, directed by Brian Logan, has been selected by the National Jazz Honors Project as a "National Winner."

One hundred thirty-eight of the finest ensembles from 32 states entered the competition by submitting a CD recording. The Mark of Excellence/National Jazz Honors Project seeks to recognize and award outstanding achievement by high school and middle school jazz ensembles, the very best selected as National Winners.

This year Wheeling was one of only two high schools selected for this unique and prestigious honor.

The adjudicator for this project was Shelly Berg, currently dean of the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami.

An accomplished performer and composer in his own right, Berg has performed or recorded with a "Who's Who" of jazz legends, including Ray Brown, Louie Bellson, Eddie Daniels, Peter Erskine, Woody Herman, Clark Terry, and Bill Watrous.
