Cary man accused of stealing thousands from country club

A 58-year-old Cary man was arrested Tuesday in connection with the theft of more than $6,000 from a local country club, the McHenry County Sheriff's Office announced Thursday.

Police say Anthony L. Krotz, of the 900 block of Manchester Street, rang up $6,267 in fraudulent transactions while he worked at a pro shop register at the Cary Country Club.

Authorities from the country club reported the thefts in July, and police determined the transactions actually began in April and ended in June.

Krotz was responsible for closing the pro shop register, but police do not know how long he was employed at the club, Lt. James Popovits said.

During a three-month investigation, police determined Krotz primarily used the register to ring up false time on the golf course and to make price adjustments on merchandise, Popovits said.

The probe ended Tuesday with Krotz's arrest.

Krotz was been charged with one count of theft over $300 and was released after posting $1,500.

His next court date is Sept. 28 at the McHenry County Government Center in Woodstock.

Theft in Krotz's case is a Class 1 felony; if found guilty, he could spend between four and 15 years behind bars.
