Burlington Central overtakes Marengo
Once Burlington Central cut down on mistakes, things came fairly easy for the Rockets.
After a back-and-forth first game, the Rockets took control in Game 2 for a 25-23, 25-13 Big Northern East girls volleyball victory in Marengo Thursday.
Brenda Thasavong had 6 kills and 3 blocks to lead Central.
"In the second game, there were two things that happened," said Central coach Marv Leavitt. "One was we cut down on our errors. It's been an area that we really need to work on - our hitting errors. In the first game, we had around 9 hitting errors."
Leavitt also said that great serving and blocking helped turn things around in Game 2.
Trailing 4-2, the Rockets went on a 14-3 run to take control. Allie O'Reilly had 2 aces during a 5-point run, and Hayley Brake served an ace during another 5-point spurt.
Blocking by Thasavong and Sydney Sand kept the Indians from mounting a comeback. During one sequence, their blocks accounted for 3 straight points.
The match was something of a microcosm of the Rockets' season. Central (8-10, 3-1) had won 3 straight.
Kaitlyn O'Reilly added 12 assists and 3 aces. Libero Samantha Bohne came up with 12 digs.
The Rockets benefited from a balanced attack, with Hannah Yoder, Audrey Djukic and Brake producing 3 kills apiece.
