VFW Auxiliary hosts spaghetti dinnerThe Ladies Auxiliary to Watch City Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1307 will hold an all-you-can-eat spaghetti dinner from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 22. The dinner will include spaghetti, salad, garlic bread, and choice of dessert. The cost is $6 for adults or $5 for children age 7 and under. The public is welcome. The Ladies and the Men's auxiliaries will hold a "Meat and Sweet Raffle" at 5 p.m. Friday, Sept. 24. All proceeds from the ladies auxiliary events benefit veterans programs. The public is welcome.The auxiliary would like to thank everyone who attended the for the POW/MIA balloon launch. It was a nice tribute to veterans who have not returned home. If you are interested in helping veterans, call Sue at (815) 477-3322 about a membership.Join Light the Night Walk on SaturdayLight the Night Walk for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Foundation will be held on Saturday, Sept. 25 in Grant Park Chicago. Registration is free. Local teams participating include the Anthony Sottile Team, with team captain Jules Sottile Campagna of Lake in the Hills. Her godson, Anthony, died in February 2010 after an almost 3-year battle with acute myeloid leukemia. The 2- to 3-mile walk will begin at 7 p.m. and be followed by a live band and food. McLean Blvd. in Elgin is hosting a weekend fundraiser, "Moosestock 2010," an event which is open to the public. On Friday, Sept. 24, the Johnny Gray Band, a ballroom-type dance band, will be playing at 8 p.m. Tickets are $6 per person. On Saturday, Sept. 25, the doors open at 4 p.m. for the feature event, Dirty Dan's Cool Rockin' Daddies, followed by the Lisa Mathews Band at 5 p.m., and Dana French and the Bluehearts at 7 p.m. The cost per person on Saturday is $10. A cash bar will be available both nights. Tickets can be purchased in advance, or at the door. So dust off your hard hats and join us at the Elgin Public Museum for different stations set up around the museum for kids and their families to get their hands dirty with excavations, activities and demonstrations during Science Night on Friday, Sept. 24.This drop-in program will run from 6 to 8 p.m. and costs $2 per person. The museum is located at in Elgin's Lords Park at 225 Grand Blvd.Bring unused meds for disposal SaturdayThe village of Algonquin has partnered with the DEA to coordinate a collaborative effort focused on removing potentially dangerous controlled substances from our nation's medicine cabinets. A national take-back day will provide a unified opportunity for the public to surrender expired, unwanted or unused pharmaceutical controlled substances and other medications to law enforcement officers for destruction. This one-day effort will bring national focus to the issue to pharmaceutical controlled substance abuse and proper disposal methods.The collection will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 25 at the Algonquin Police Department, 2200 Harnish Drive; entrance on Stonegate Road. It is free and open to everyone. The program is anonymous. You are encouraged to remove your personal information from the prescription label. Participants can dispose of medication in its original container or by removing the medication from its container and disposing of it directly into the disposal box. All expired or unwanted controlled, noncontrolled and over the counter medicines are accepted; no liquids are accepted. Melrose, Elgin.A donation of $10 includes German food and music. There will be raffles for Elgin Holiday Inn Executive Suite including a $20 gift certificate to Bennigan's and a one-night stay at Illinois Beach Resort in Zion. Winner does not need to be present.
