Riverwoods man denies auto theft charges

A Riverwoods man pleaded not guilty Tuesday in Lake County Circuit Court to charges he possessed the stolen car that was found in his driveway.

Yevgeny Grushevsky, 27, faces up to seven years in prison if convicted of unlawful possession of a stolen car.

Assistant State's Attorney Steven Derue said a 64-year-old Wheeling man drove his 1993 Toyota Corolla to the Speedway gas station at 201 N. Milwaukee Ave. around 5 a.m. on Aug. 2.

The man left the keys in the car's ignition while he went into the station, Derue said, and another man got into the car and drove it away.

Buffalo Grove police arrived on the scene and reviewed the station's security videotape, which showed a man being dropped off at the station and getting into the victim's car.

Police identified the man as Grushevsky, Derue said, and drove to his residence in the first block of Timberline Lane.

The car was found in the driveway, Derue said, and the officer took Grushevsky into custody as he was walking away from the car.

Court records show Grushevsky was convicted of drug possession in 2006 and placed on probation, and he has pending charges of drug possession and driving under the influence in Lake County.

Associate Judge Theodore Potkonjak scheduled a trial of the case for Nov. 15 and ordered Grushevsky, who is held on $50,000 bond, to appear in court Sept. 24.
