Businesses should just pay as they go
We must extend Dress Up Boys tax cuts to create jobs is the popular refrain. If they create jobs, what has been happening while they were in effect? If they were so important why did the GOP put a sunset date on them?
Different government funds are low and getting lower. So the economic pundits say we must cut the contributions going into them - income tax, social security reductions, sales tax holidays et. al. Therefore, the funds go lower. Let's give up the theory that tax cuts create jobs. Smart people with good ideas create jobs not bottom feeders that need to be coaxed.
Let's just stop this. Pay as you go. If you need a tax cut to do business, you don't belong in business. Real businessmen know what their balance sheet is; have a plan and are good credit risks. In the Daily Herald's Sept. 16 business section, a front page leader touted the opening of a fast food chicken restaurant. Nothing wrong with that but the article didn't report the number of employees who will work there, if the wages are above minimum wage, if health care is included, if the business is in a TIF area.
What this country needs is manufacturing companies not more franchises.
I know I always rant that no banisters have been jailed, much less prosecuted. If that happened maybe we would see where all that money disappeared to. No, Martha Stewart doesn't count.
