Kirk's health care position superior
A quick review of Mark Kirk's web page under the "Issues: Healthcare" section may give readers an insight into the candidate's core principles with regard to the economy.
Of the seven bulleted items listed, three go straight to the heart of a free market philosophy. They are: end defensive medicine by enacting lawsuit reform and expanding electronic medical records; allow Americans to buy cheaper and more flexible health insurance from any state in the nation; give individuals who buy their own insurance the same tax break employers receive.
All three speak directly to the concepts of equal access, competition, and an elimination of the government choosing winners and losers. Perhaps health care reform is not the whole answer, certainly without tort reform and healthy competition between insurance providers any effort will fall short of the mark.
If Kirk is elected in November and does nothing else with his time in the Senate but push for a free market approach to health care, then it would be time well spent.
After reviewing the same topic on his opponent's web page, it is my understanding that a good step forward from that candidate's viewpoint is a "nonprofit option." Why this fear of the profit motive? Profit generates wealth, wealth offers security, and is something anyone voting for either candidate seeks for themselves.
