Westerkamp connection lifts Montini to victory
After missing the last two games, Montini quarterback Matt Westerkamp wasted little time finding his favorite target, wide receiver Jordan Westerkamp, as the Broncos beat St. Francis 28-14 Friday night.
The Westerkamp cousins hooked up twice in the first half. The first touchdown came on 41-yard fly pattern where Jordan caught the ball on the sideline and beat his defender as he dove for the pylon and scored.
In their second touchdown connection, Matt got drilled as he released the ball sending the ball fluttering in the air downfield, but the 6-foot 1-inch Jordan outleaped two St. Francis defenders to come down with the ball and fell into the end zone to put the Broncos up 14-0.
"Every quarterback should want to come back to the chemistry Jordan and I have," Matt Westerkamp said. "I have tons of confidence in him as a receiver. On the second touchdown, I felt the pressure but got rid of the ball in time and there was Jordan outworking the defenders for the ball. He makes my job easy the way he goes and gets the ball."
Despite getting Matt back at the realms, Montini (2-2) managed to make things interesting as they turned the ball over 5 times in the game, including twice in a four-minute span where the Spartans were able to close to within one score.
First it was the Spartans running back Bob Miller scoring from 2-yards out then it Jeff Rutkowski scoring on a 30-yard passing play, cutting the lead to 21-14.
"We let them right back in the game after those two turnovers," Montini coach Chris Andriano said "Turnovers are absolutely driving us crazy so far. I don't know what we need to do to make our kids understand the value of keeping the football in our possession. It is starting to get really frustrating."
For the game, Westerkamp completed 17-of-22 passes for 212 yards with 2 passing touchdowns and one rushing touchdown while Jordan Westerkamp caught 6 balls for 126 yards in the win. Dimitri Willis also chipped in with 80 yards rushing.
Miller had 87 yards rushing on 19 carries in the loss for St. Francis (2-2).
