Scouting LaSalle-Peru at Kaneland
LaSalle-Peru (1-2) at Kaneland (3-0)
Game time: 7:30 p.m. today.
Last year: Did not play.
Last week: Sterling 13, LaSalle-Peru 0; Kaneland 55, Dixon 6.
Outlook: LaSalle-Peru, which runs the split-back veer and a little spread offense but doesn't throw much, encounters a Kaneland squad that has outscored its opponents 132-40. This Northern Illinois Big 12 crossover opponent can't be discounted, as it lost a close one to undefeated Sterling, ranked No. 6 in this week's Associated Press 5A poll. The Cavaliers offer defensive end C.J. Robbins (6-5, 248), who has committed to Indiana University. Senior Luke Kowalczyk is LaSalle-Peru's top ball carrier and when the Cavaliers do throw, like Kaneland they have tall receivers in 6-3 Tyler Jakse and 6-4 Marty Riva. Knights cornerbacks Kyle Davidson and Jacob Razo will see them on flare patterns. Knights fans saw just about everything from Blake Serpa against Dixon. The senior defensive end-receiver-running back, who has verbally committed to Central Michigan, scored on touchdown passes of 63 and 47 yards and on an 11-yard run, blocked a punt, made a sack, added 4 tackles and 3 quarterback hurries. A week after nearly splitting his yardage between rushing and passing, quarterback Joe Camiliere stuck to the air, completing 10 of 15 passes for 279 yards, 5 touchdowns. On the season Camiliere has thrown 10 touchdown passes to 1 interception. Once again, against Dixon special teams clicked with Quinn Buschbacher returning a pair of kickoffs for 99 total yards and Matt Rodriguez averaging 52 yards on kickoffs. When Knights coach Tom Fedderly mentions he wants to eliminate mistakes they must be on run defense, which Dixon exploited for 183 yards. Fedderly said, "We want to make sure we're running on all cylinders when we get into conference play."
Next week: DeKalb (2-1) at LaSalle-Peru, Sept. 24; Kaneland at Rochelle (2-1), Sept. 24.
