Barrington-area paramedics, restaurant staff honored for saving life

Four Barrington-area paramedics were recently honored as local heroes at a Hoffman Estates retirement community for having saved the life of one of its residents during the summer.

Mel Rosenfeld, 91, took the opportunity to personally thank the four who came to his aid when he choked on some food at the Onion Pub & Brewery in Lake Barrington. The paramedics successfully cleared the obstruction and transported Rosenfeld to the hospital.

On Sept. 10, The Devonshire of Hoffman Estates formally recognized Lt. Greg Keegan and firefighter-paramedics Eric Jordan, Angela Rausch and Art Thompson of the Barrington Countryside Fire Protection District with commemorative plaques at the Local Heroes Award ceremony.

The Devonshire's Director of Sales & Marketing Tim Sullivan said the purpose of the event was "to recognize people who do incredible things."

"We don't see ourselves as heroes because we were doing what we were trained to do," Keegan said. "I will say that it was very nice to see Mr. Rosenfeld at the ceremony."

The Devonshire also presented awards to members of the Onion Pub staff for their efforts to help Rosenfeld until the paramedics arrived.
