Scouting Maine South at Maine West

Maine South (1-2) at Maine West (1-2)

When: 7 p.m. today

Last week: Maine South d. Highland Park 42-0; Maine West lost to Waukegan 34-33 (ot)

Outlook: Maine West was so close to coming into the District 207 matchup 2-1 and takes on a two-time defending 8A champion Maine South team that lost to Schaumburg, the state's top-ranked 8A team, and defending 7A state champ Wheaton Warrenville South. "They're no normal 1-2 team," said Maine West coach Chris Hare. Maine West RB Calvin Williams had his second straight solid game with 174 yards and 2 TDs on 32 carries and QB Ziggy Krycka ran for 2 TDs and threw for a score in OT, but a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty force a long extra point that just missed. "We did some very good things ... and (the penalty) wasn't how we lost that game. We were right there and competing, which was our goal, but we have to find a way to win those games. We really weren't stopped but we hurt ourselves again (2 turnovers)." Maine South rotated QBs on each series the first two weeks but last week sophomore Matt Alviti was 7-for-10 for 129 yards and a TD en route to a 35-0 halftime lead and junior Jimmy Frankos ran for a TD and threw for 48 yards in the second half. "(Alviti) can throw and run," Hare said. "As an athlete he's tough to stop." Maine West will be without versatile Jezz Buluran (concussion). Maine South's 63-0 win last year was its ninth straight in the series.
