Fremd can't contain Meyer, Elk Grove
Elk Grove quarterback Nick Meyer was uncontainable Friday night against Fremd.
There were plays when it looked like the Vikings' defense was going to drop Meyer for a big loss, and on those plays Meyer either found a receiver downfield, or scrambled away for positive yardage.
Meyer threw for 201 yards and 2 touchdowns while completing 12-of-25 passes. He ran for 99 yards and a touchdown on 22 carries as the visiting Grenadiers defeated Fremd 29-22 in the Mid-Suburban League football crossover.
"He was a playmaker, he was a difference-maker," Fremd coach Mike Donatucci said. "We didn't have anybody step up."
Elk Grove (2-1) coach Brian Doll said his team was looking at the game against Fremd (0-3) as a must win, and his quarterback was able to deliver.
"He's just special," Doll said of Meyer. "Sometimes we kind of go, 'Wow. We are asking him to do so much.' But he's a special athlete."
Big plays hurt the Vikings as Meyer connected with senior running back Mike Wary for gains of 67 and 49 yards. The 67-yarder resulted in a touchdown, and the 49-yarder set up Wary's 15-yard TD run. Those were Wary's only two catches.
"You've got to make plays when you get put in that situation," Meyer said. "Those are fun to watch. I was just scrambling, and it's what's worked for us."
Wary's 49-yard reception came on third-and-19 early in the fourth quarter with the Grens only leading by 7 points.
"We never put our heads down," Wary said. "We always look for the next big play where other teams might get nervous. We capitalize in situations like that."
"When you get in those third down situations and you can make a big play out of it, it is huge for you," Doll said.
It wasn't just the offense, though. Elk Grove's secondary intercepted Fremd quarterback Rich Concialdi four times. Kyle Pass, Eddie Solorio, Joey Bishoff and John Eliades came up with the interceptions.
"We're not a bad team, we're just making bad plays right now," Donatucci said. "It's up to us to straighten it out. It's not about who we are playing."
Running back Justin Wallace carried 28 times for 141 yards and a touchdown for Fremd. Concialdi completed 7-of-13 passes for 112 yards and had a touchdown pass to Jeff Diegel, who caught 5 passes for 58 yards and ran 4 times for 26 yards. Concialdi also had a rushing touchdown.
