Scouting Dixon at Kaneland
Dixon (0-2) at Kaneland (2-0)
Game time: 7:30 p.m. today
Last year: Did not play.
Last week: Rock Island Alleman 49, Dixon 14; Kaneland 40, Huntley 12.
Outlook: Kaneland has yet to play in its new Northern Illinois Big 12 East alignment, but here's a crossover foe for a little flavor. The Knights look good. Whereas last year against Huntley quarterback Joe Camiliere stumbled a bit with his only 3 interceptions of the season, on Friday he was clean in leading his team to a 34-0 lead. Camiliere completed 8 of 12 passes for 145 yards with touchdown passes to Kyle Davidson and Taylor Andrews, and added 143 yards rushing, with 3 touchdowns. But Kaneland coach Tom Fedderly emphasized it was a complete team win. Blake Serpa added 60 yards and a touchdown behind a solid offensive line, freshman kicker Matt Rodriguez put Huntley deep in its own side of the field, and the defense - headed by Davidson's second interception in as many games and linebacker Tyler Callaghan both causing and recovering a fumble - forced Huntley into four straight three-and-outs and 1 first down in the first half. Dixon, which lost 34-13 to East Moline United in its opener, got half its 164 yards rushing on an 82-yard Preston Lumzy touchdown run 21 seconds into the game against Rock Island Alleman, according to Quad-Cities Online writer Ryan Sergeant. Alleman, meanwhile, ran 69 plays total, and for 302 yards on the ground. Facing a Dixon group that's run Pro-I and Wing-T offenses in its first two games, Fedderly respects Lumzy - second last spring in Class 2A discus, fifth in shot put - as well as a big defensive line. "They come from a conference where they go against a lot of teams that play Wing-T and run the ball," Fedderly said. "We'll see how they can defend the pass."
Next week: Dixon at Rochelle (2-0), Sept. 17; LaSalle-Peru (1-1) at Kaneland, Sept. 17.
