Fall's fest time: Wood Dale Harvest Fest tradition continues

Some leaves are beginning to break loose from the trees and nights are cooler.

It must be time for Wood Dale's annual Harvest Fest.

A tradition since the 1970s, Harvest Fest celebrates the fall and the wonders of the Wood Dale Historical Society's collection at Yesterday's Farm Museum, 850 N. Wood Dale Road. Festivities run 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 12.

"People really enjoy themselves for the day," said Judi Ryan, first vice president of the historical society. "Usually a lot of people come from all over the area, so we get people from out of town too."

The day's events include sheep shearing, felting and spinning, a cake walk and silent auction and raffle.

Taylor's Battery will give demonstrations and fire a cannon on the hour.

Children's activities include pony rides and a petting zoo, an obstacle course and a balloon lady.

A historical society food booth will serve up brats, corn on the cob, pickles on a stick, pumpkin pie, nachos and cheese, hot dogs, chips, snacks and drinks.

The Stay Tuned string band will play three sets throughout the day.

A voyager will teach children about hatchet throwing and knives and such.

Additionally, the Second Kentucky Cavalry re-enactors will do several demonstrations and teachings.

Tours of the museum take place at noon and 2 p.m. The museum holds treasures that date back as far as the 1800s.

Parking is available in the Wood Dale Park District parking lot.

For information, call the historical society at (630) 595-8777.

"Hopefully the weather will hold up and if it's going to rain, it'll hold off until Monday," said Ann Morong, of Wood Dale, a historical society member.
