A few more words on 'liberal revision'
In response to Steve Toye's Aug. 26 letter, "Liberal revision of history," I would like to point out a few facts:
1. The attacks on 9/11 didn't happen because of CIA's incompetence; they happened because President Bush completely ignored CIA's repeated warnings of an imminent U.S. attack. 2. President Clinton achieved his trillion-dollar budget surplus first and foremost by moderately raising taxes, which helped grow the economy.
3. President Roosevelt and his New Deal pulled this country out of the Great Depression and into three decades of economic growth/expansion. Denying this historical fact speaks volumes.
4. President Carter was among this country's best presidents. It was not his fault that OPEC jacked up oil prices sky high, causing world inflation. 5. President Obama's stimulus fund would have created even more jobs than it did had he not searched for bipartisan support and let Republicans talk him into diverting 35 percent of the funds for tax cuts.
Well-informed voters are vital for the functioning of our nation's democracy. Our schools and our media would do well to cultivate individual independent critical thinking and lifelong learning to help safeguard our precious freedoms and a government that solves problems and serves the public rather than the corporate interest.
