Fremd edges Hersey in MSL triangular
Youth is definitely served in high school golf, as evidenced by Fremd sophomore Zach Isoda's sparkling score of 37 at Wednesday's Elk Grove Mid-Suburban League boys triangular.
But let's not forget about the seniors.
Two seasoned, veteran teams with high hopes for the postseason finished 1-2 at Fox Run Golf Course, with the Vikings just edging Hersey 153-154 and the host Grens third at 167.
"Every one of our top six guys can go low every time out," said Fremd senior Jackson Tworek, who shot 38 on the Fox Run back nine, as did classmate Brian Bodolay. "We don't just rely on four guys like some other teams do."
"One through six we're very consistent," agreed Fremd coach Josh Teschner, whose team improved to 5-0 in the MSL. "We've got some birdie machines, and we've also got some guys who are 'Steady Eddies.'"
Freshman Josh Rosenzweig pitched in for Fremd with a 40, while Hersey senior Kevin Brawley took medalist honors with a 1-over 36, a round that included 4 birdies.
"My wedges were on point today," said Brawley, who rolled in three putts of about 20 feet. "It's nice when you're not putting from 50 feet away."
Brawley is one of six seniors in the Hersey lineup and says that fact could take the Huskies a long way this year.
"We've got four starters back from last year," said Brawley. "We're an experienced team and that's nice to have come tournament time. Our first goal is to win conference, then qualify to go downstate and I think we've got a solid shot."
"This year, we're striving for higher goals," added Hersey's Steven Genz, a second-year varsity player who fired a 38 Wednesday. "Lately we've been hitting our stride."
Ryan Starkman and John Durkacz each carded 40 for the Huskies, who improved to 7-2 in MSL play, while Adam Dill led Elk Grove with a 40.
Dill is another of this year's crop of stellar seniors, but is in a bit of a different position with the Grens as one of only two seniors on the roster.
"I'm more confident this year," said Dill, "and I see myself in more of a leadership role for the juniors and the younger guys. I help out at the freshman and sophomore practices as well and make sure everyone learns the rules (of the game.)"
The Grens already have two more MSL wins than last year, thanks in part to Dill, who has his individual sights set on a lofty objective in his final season.
"I'd love to get downstate," said Dill. "That's one of my main goals."
