Man hurt in Bloomingdale hostage situation dies

The 31-year-old Bloomingdale man who apparently shot himself after a standoff with police on Thursday has died, authorities said.

The man, identified as Ellis Burns, died late Friday. The exact cause of death was not available; an autopsy is scheduled for today, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office. Bloomingdale police could not be reached for comment.

The police were called Thursday afternoon to Burns' apartment complex on Regency Drive, where he was said to be holding a woman captive with a handgun. The woman was able to escape while officers negotiated with Burns, police later reported.

After several hours, police heard shots being fired and entered the apartment, where Burns lay with an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound. Burns was taken to Adventist GlenOaks Medical Center in Glendale Heights; he was later transferred to Loyola University Medical Center.
