Scouting Buffalo Grove at Schaumburg
Buffalo Grove (1-0) at Schaumburg (1-0)
When: 7:30 p.m. today at Gary Scholz Stadium
Last week: Buffalo Grove d. Mundelein 41-6; Schaumburg d. Maine South 29-17
Outlook: BG takes a major step up in class against the state's second-ranked 8A team while Schaumburg hopes it doesn't take a big step down after beating the two-time defending 8A champs. "To have an opportunity like Schaumburg in Week 2 helped our kids keep the opening-week win in perspective," said BG coach Jim Farrell of a game it led 35-0 late in the first quarter. "That made it easy to get our focus back. They're flying high and we know we have our work cut out for us." Bison QB Mike Garrity and RB Taylor Goyke didn't get many opportunities last week because Richie Zirngibl scored off an interception and Dan Recht and Joe Damisch returned fumbles for TDs. "Their line gets after it and they have a nice collection of skill players on both sides of the ball," said Schaumburg coach Mark Stilling. "They're explosive and when you score on defense, what a huge momentum swing that is for them." Schaumburg's defense led by Joe Zolper, Josh Marchok, Pat Felde and Bob Quilico stepped up last week to make sure RB Shepard Little (244 yards) and QB Mark Iannotti got plenty of offensive chances. Schaumburg, which has won the last three but trails the series 9-7, also gets OL Andres Delarosa back from injury but freshman Matt Zolper and junior Mike Baumhart will continue to see significant time. BG hasn't started 2-0 since it was 11-1 in 2002; Schaumburg last was 2-0 in 2006.
