Arlington Heights Museum to host free event
Picnic, Plein Air and Pastimes: Celebrating Arlington Heights' History will be held from 1-4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 12, on the grounds of the grounds of the Arlington Heights Historical Museum, corner of Euclid Ave. and Vail St.
The museum celebrates its community's history with this free event. Many activities have been planned for the whole family including music, games, and tours of the historic buildings. Bring the kids for Grandparents Day, too.
Loose Change and Friends will perform throughout the day, playing an eclectic variety of traditional American string band and folk music, including instrumentals and vocal harmonies that are fun to sing and play. The banjo, mandolin, guitar, autoharp, bass, ukulele, mountain dulcimer, strumstick and various other instruments will be featured.
Local artists will be painting and sketching throughout the grounds during this fifth annual Plein Air event. Wood carvers and wood turners will also join the other artists. All artists will have completed work for sale, too.
Wood-carved dolls which are part of the Museum's Martha Mills doll collection will be on display in the Banta House; Mrs. Mills carved many of these dolls herself.
The Arlington Heights Camera Club will take staged-photographs behind the coach house. Dress up in period costumes, pose with the museum cow and have your photo taken. The musuem will have costumes that make you look like you are right out of the history pages.
Other activities include typical table and outdoor games of the 1900s and 21st century including cornhole/bags for adults and kids. There is a balloon twister and an art table for kids, too.
The Heritage Gallery will be open during this event. The current exhibit, "Arlington Artists on Display," features the mixed-media work of over 40 artists who live or work in Arlington Heights.
Karl Gates of Gates Appraisals will be giving appraisals. If you are curious what a family heirloom is worth or want to know more about it, this is your chance to find out. Collectibles, china, silverware, artwork, jewelry and small furniture are some of the items that can be appraised. Appraisals are $5 per item or for a collection of 20-25 small items.
Giant cookies and the Arlington Heritage Cookbook will be on sale. The historical society will also provide complimentary popcorn and root beer.
