Kane County 4-H at state fair

Thirty-four 4-H'ers from throughout Kane County sent their award winning projects from the Kane County Fair to compete in the 4-H division at the 2010 Illinois State Fair. Below is a summary of those results.

• Batavia: Kaitlynrose Bicek, Natural Resources, Award of Excellence; Bram Borger-Johnson, Foods & Nutrition, Award of Excellence; Radha Deshmukh, Foods & Nutrition, Award of Excellence; Cydnee Iwanicki, Visual Arts, Clay, Superior; Jack Mueller, Theatre Arts, Award of Excellence; and Nicholas Schuster, Computer Science, Award of Excellence.

• Burlington: Melanie Croke, Visual Arts, Heritage Arts, Award of Excellence.

• Elburn: Jeffrey Gillett, Public Presentations, Formal Speech, Superior.

• Elgin: Lauren Beaudin, Fashion Revue, Award of Excellence; Katarina Dutra, Fashion Revue, Award of Excellence; Julia Gerdes, Clothing & Textiles, Award of Excellence; Lisa Holmberg, Natural Resources, Superior; Katie McKellar, Visual Arts, Fiber, Award of Excellence; Kristen McKellar, Robotics, Superior; Matthew McKellar, Robotics. Superior; Larisa Sica, Clothing & Textiles, Superior; Thomas Smeenge, Intercultural-Club, Award of Excellence; and Emily Studt, Photography, Award of Excellence.

• Geneva: Sam Urben, Intercultural-Individual, Award of Excellence.

• Gilberts: William Lee, Geology, Award of Excellence.

• Hampshire: Martin Burnidge, Visual Arts, Chalk/Carbon/Pigment, Award of Excellence; Kelli Linder, Visual Arts, Fiber. Superior; and Meghan Linder, Visual Arts, Fiber, Superior.

• Hinckley: Bret Bastian, Woodworking, Superior.

• Huntley: Melissa Brown, Visual Arts, Chalk/Carbon/Pigment, Award of Excellence.

• Maple Park: Jessica Poust, Visual Arts, Chalk/Carbon/Pigment, Superior.

• St. Charles: Chelsea Danforth, Photography, Superior; Claudia Danforth, Clothing & Textiles, Superior; Leah Horton, Animal Science, Superior; Madde Klinkey, Citizenship, Award of Excellence; Kaitlyn Taylor, Food & Nutrition, Award of Excellence; and Susie Thompson, Intergenerational, Superior.

• Sugar Grove: Samantha Lederman, Photography, Superior; and Demi Schlehofer, Visual Arts, Glass/Plastic, Superior.

In addition to project exhibits, talented 4-H members from throughout Illinois shared their talent during the annual Performance Showcase at the 2010 Illinois State Fair. Youth performed various dances and songs at the event held in the Illinois Building on the State Fairgrounds on Aug. 15. Members auditioned for the performance by submitting a videotape. Locally, Ian Armesy of Sugar Grove, piano solo; Elizabeth Bretscher of Elgin, hammered dulcimer solo; Emily Smeenge of Elgin, piano solo; and Isabelle Urben of Geneva, ballet were selected.

Several Kane County 4-H'ers also competed in the various animal/livestock events at the Illinois State Fair. Below is a summary of their results.

• Josh DeDina, Hampshire: Poultry, Bantams, Cockerel, second place; Bantams, Pullet, second place; and Market/Egg Production, Brown, third place. • Matthew Drendel, Hampshire: Dairy Cattle, Holstein 2-year Cow, second place; Land of Lincoln Holstein 2-year Cow, second place; Holstein Winter Yearling Heifer, first place; and Land of Lincoln Holstein Winter Yearling Heifer, first place.

• Buddy Haas, Elburn: Beef Cattle, Crossbred Steer, 1,152-1,183 pounds, first place; All Other Breeds Jr. Steer, 1222-1270 pounds, third place.

• Leah Horton, St. Charles: Beef Cattle, Shorthorn Heifer, third place.

• Maddie Marucco, St. Charles: Horse & Pony, Hunter Horse Division 2, Dressage-Training Level, Test 1, Exhibitor 10-14 years, second place; Pony Hunter Division 1, Pony Hunter Conformation not over 58 inches, first place; Pony Hunter Division 1, Pony Handy Hunter over Fences not over 58 inches, third place; Pony Hunter Division 1, Pony Hunter Hack not over 58 inches, third place; Pony Hunter Division 1, Pony Hunter Under Saddle not over 58 inches, third place; and Pony Hunter Division 1, Reserve Champion.

• Wray McKenzie, Big Rock: Beef Cattle, Crossbred Steer, 1333-1435 pounds, third place.

• Alexis Parisek, Elgin: Horse & Pony, Hunter Horse Division 2, Stock Type Hunter under Saddle Horses over 58 inches; Exhibitor 15-16 years, second place; Western Horse Division 6, Western Showmanship, Pony or Horse, Exhibitor 15-16 years, third place.

• Morgan Parisek, Elgin: Horse & Pony, Hunter Horse Division 2, Hunter Conformation Mares over 58 inches, second place; Versatility Class, Western Horsemanship, second place; Western Horse Division 6, Western Horsemanship over 56 inches, Exhibitor, 17-18 years, first place; Western Horse Division 6, Western Showmanship, Pony or Horse, Exhibitor, 17-18 years, first place; and Western Horse Division 6, Reserve Champion, Exhibitor 17-18 years.

• Amanda Richardson, Plato Center: Horse & Pony, Pony Hunter Division 1, Hunt Seat Equitation over Fences not over 58 inches, third place.

• Arrianna Willis, Batavia: Horse & Pony, Pony Hunter Division 1, Beginners Equitation over Fences, Pony or Horse, third place.
