York rallies past Prospect
Running back Ryan Kent made a good first-game impression for the full house at York High School on Friday night.
The senior running back scored 3 rushing touchdowns and caught a 68-yard pass for a fourth in the Dukes' 34-21 come-from-behind win over Prospect.
"He's a running back that really grew up," said York coach Bill Lech. "He has a great work ethic and he's a captain. He comes to work everyday."
Kent rushed 17 times for 164 yards and caught 3 passes for 75 yards.
"It was a good win to start the season off," said Kent. "We got some weapons and if we don't make mistakes, we can have a good season."
The Knights (0-1) started strong by going 62 yards in 6 plays to score on quarterback Steve Dazzo's 18-yard run for a 7-0 lead following the kickoff.
Kent tied the game at 7-7 with a 68-yard jaunt after catching a flare pass from quarterback Jim Nudera (9-for-15, 192 yards) with 5:42 left in the first half.
Prospect countered with Peter Bonahoom's (13 carries, 121 yards) 60-yard run and a 14-7 lead moments later.
On fourth-and-1 from the Dukes' 35, Kent slipped through the line and went 65 yards to tie the game.
"I was looking for 2 yards and got 65," said Kent. "It was a play where we put two tackles on the right side. They just cleared out their men."
With five seconds left in the half, Dazzo (9-for-26, 175 yards) hit receiver Steve Czerniak with a 23-yard pass for a 21-14 Prospect halftime lead.
Nudera connected with David Byerley on a 16-yard touchdown pass on fourth down to tie the game at 21-21 with 6:30 left in the third quarter.
Kent scored the go ahead touchdown on a 44-yard run with 1:37 left in the quarter. In the fourth quarter he scored on a 4 yard run.
York finished with 419 yards of offense to Prospect's 463.
Overall I'm pleased with what I saw," said Lech. "We have to play defense for 24 minutes every half to win games. The offense did well. We're built to get 4 yards on every play but then we get a big one once in a while. I think we wore them down a little in the third quarter."
York's offensive line of Bob LeGere, Eli Kosanovich, Sean Crowe, Jacob Ruprecht, Jason DuBois and tight end Rob Crowe paved the way.
The Knights committed 3 of their 4 turnovers in the second half. Prospect was without Bonahoom for most of the second half with leg cramps.
"We didn't play with discipline in certain situations, " said Prospect coach Brent Pearlman. "We got worn down at times and that's something we have to fix. When I look at the films I'm not sure if I'm going to see too much that I liked."
