Your new: Barrington Area CROP Hunger Walk committee gears up
Representatives of area churches, schools, businesses and civic organizations are preparing for the 28th annual Barrington Area CROP Hunger Walk, an annual community hunger education and fundraising event sponsored by Church World Service, an international ecumenical relief, development and refugee resettlement agency providing assistance in the United States and around the world.
Looking to make a difference in these trying times, the committee members are determined to improve upon last year's performance of 353 walkers and over $43,000 in receipts to help stop hunger and poverty here in our community and around the world
This year the Barrington area and some 2,000 cities and towns nationwide are joining together in interfaith community CROP Hunger Walks around the theme "Ending Hunger one Step at a Time."
Many of the CROP Walkers will be wearing T-shirts, proclaiming their solidarity with the millions of neighbors around the world who have to walk to live - as well as with the millions served by local food pantries, food banks and meal sites here in the U.S. These local efforts share in the funds raised by CROP Hunger Walks.
Stepping up to "End hunger one step at a time" are committee members of the 2010 Barrington Area CROP Hunger Walk Committee: Pat Enders, Salem United Methodist Church; David Chidley, member at large, Barrington; Barbara Schmidt, Christine Melone and Pam Jensen, St. Mark's Episcopal Church, Barrington; Barbara Schwartz, Presbyterian Church of Barrington; Konrad Bald, Lutheran Church of the Atonement, Barrington; Candee Nustra and Peggy Redmore, Wauconda Federated Church; Chris Streed, Betty Reed and Linda Osikowicz, Barrington United Methodist Church; John Grom, Community Church of Barrington; Jill Bauer, Barrington High School; Cathy Bayer, First Church of Christ, Scientist; Adrienne Kalmes and Laura Cerretani, St. Anne Catholic Community; Sue Mullen, St. Matthew Lutheran Church; Martha Gilette, St. Michael's Episcopal Church; Rick Jurs, St. Paul United Church of Christ.
Twenty-five percent of all funds raised in Barrington is kept in the area for the Barrington Giving Day, Barrington Meals With Wheels, Wauconda-Island Lake Food Pantry, the Northern Illinois Food Bank, the People in Need program of the Barrington Area Ministerial Association, Project HOPE and the FISH Food Pantry, Carpentersville.
The WALK takes place throughout the village of Barrington, beginning at St. Anne Catholic Community, 120 N. Ela Street with registration at 12:30 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 17. To learn more, contact the event chairperson, Adrienne Kalmes, (847) 382-3626 representing St. Anne.
