Two hurt after SUV jumps median, hits semi in Kane Co.

Two people were injured in a crash late Thursday on the Reagan Tollway after their sport utility vehicle jumped a median and slammed into a semitrailer heading in the opposite direction near Sugar Grove, state police said Friday.

Master Sgt. Tim Zych said two females in a Honda CRV were eastbound on Interstate 88 at about 10:25 p.m. when the driver lost control and drove into the grassy median near Route 47 between Elburn and Sugar Grove.

Zych said the CRV hit the median, jumped up an embankment, cleared a steel cable planted in the median to stop cars from veering into oncoming traffic, landed in the westbound lanes, and slammed into the rear axle of the semitrailer in the westbound lanes of I-88.

The two women, both in the mid-20s, were injured in the crash, Zych said.

The driver of the vehicle was transported to Provena Mercy Hospital in Aurora with a broken leg and other non-life-threatening injuries, Zych said.

The female passenger of CRV was transported via helicopter to Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove with a broken pelvis and other non-life-threatening injuries, Zych said.

The driver of the truck was not injured, he added.

The tollway was shut down for about two hours to clean up the crash as well as investigate the accident.

Alcohol did not play a role in the crash, and the incident remains under investigation, Zych said. No citations have been issued as of late Friday.
