Bears linebacker Roach has knee surgery

Linebacker Nick Roach underwent arthroscopic surgery this morning on his left knee for an injury suffered in Saturday night's 32-17 preseason loss to the Raiders.

The debridement procedure is not expected to keep Roach out of the season opener on Sept. 12 against the Lions. However, it will affect his battle with Pisa Tinoisamoa for the starting job at strong-side linebacker. The two were running neck and neck throughout training camp and the preseason, but Tinoisamoa is now expected to be the starter against the Lions.

"We figured it was a small thing going in," Roach said on the team's web site, when he returned to Halas Hall before noon today. "Just with the timing of when the regular-season starts, it seemed like the right time to get it fixed, the proactive thing."
