Bullets found on Wheaton College campus; dorm locked down

A dormitory on the Wheaton College campus was locked down by police for several hours Tuesday after a small package of bullets was found outside the building.

Police said they were contacted by college public safety officials about 9:30 a.m. after the package was found outside Smith-Traber Hall along Howard Street.

As a safety precaution, the dormitory, which houses freshmen and sophomores, was locked down and the entire building was searched, officials said in a statement. A nitrate-sniffing dog from the DuPage County Sheriff's Office assisted in the search.

The search was completed around 2:30 p.m. and no weapon or other dangerous device was found. Students were allowed back into the dormitory.

Wheaton detectives are continuing to investigate. Anyone with information is encouraged to call Cmdr. James Volpe at (630) 260-2055.
