Schaumburg offers Citizen Police Academy this fall

The Schaumburg Police Department is again accepting applications for the 10-week fall session of its Citizen Police Academy.

Having taken the class a couple years ago, I can assure anyone who believes they may be interested that this is a worthwhile use of your time.

Each week, you'll meet officers from different divisions of the department who will share their experiences and approach to a unique profession.

The class provides not only useful information but clears up a lot of society's commonly held misperceptions about law enforcement as depicted in movies and on TV. You'll see how criminal cases are solved by pure investigation, not by creative writing.

Schaumburg has been hosting its academy for the past 14 years as a way of forging relationships between the department and the community.

Schaumburg's academy is open to adults who either live or work in the village. If neither of these criteria apply to you, you should check whether your own town has its own Citizen Police Academy as many do.

Schaumburg's classes will run from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Wednesday evenings from Sept. 29 to Dec. 8.

For more information or to receive an application, visit the police department page on the Village of Schaumburg website at villageofschaumburg.com or contact Sgt. John Nebl at (847) 348-7276 or at jnebl@ci.schaumburg.il.us.
