Fort Wayne works to keep Navistar workers in city
FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- Fort Wayne officials are working to try to keep jobs and workers in the city following Navistar International Corp.'s announcement that it plans to phase down operations there over the next several years.
The city is offering to help match Warrenville-based Navistar employees with new jobs and is hoping to attract new employers. It also is creating a $100,000 scholarship fund for worker retraining.
Mayor Tom Henry says the city is obligated to do as much as possible for Navistar employees who want to remain in Fort Wayne.
Navistar makes commercial and military trucks, diesel engines, school and commercial buses, recreational vehicles and chassis for motor homes and step vans.
