Walsh's bounce-back lifts Prospect

Who says you can't recover from shooting a 10 during an 18-hole round?

Allison Walsh sure showed it's not impossible.

The Prospect junior shot an uncharacteristic 10 on the second hole at the Mount Prospect Golf Course on Tuesday and then recovered for the best round of her career.

Walsh's score of 77, including a school-record 2-under-par 34 on the back nine, tied teammate and friend Christine Garmoe and helped lead the Knights to second place in their sixth annual invite.

New Trier won its fifth Prospect Invite, including three straight.

The defending Class 4A runner-up edged Prospect 319-318. Those two were followed by Stevenson (340), Prospect 'A' (365), Glenbrook South (376), Maine South (382) and Conant (432).

"It felt real good to shoot the same score as Christine (Garmoe, also a junior who played at the No. l flight Wednesday while Walsh was No. 2)," Walsh said. "We are really good friends.

"And I'm happy our team is getting close to New Trier and competing with them."

Garmoe's 77 on the par-71 layout was 1 stroke shy of her career best.

Walsh's back-nine performance, which tied Anne Senn for the school record, included birdies on the two par 3s.

"To have a 10 and come back and shoot a 77 shows a lot about Allison as a person," said Prospect coach Jim Hamann, whose brother Jeff coaches Maine South's girls. "I'm so proud of her. She is setting a great example for our younger kids. The way she treats every shot with the same focus and intensity is amazing."

"Mr. Hamann talks a lot about battling and not giving up," Walsh said. "I really thought about that."

Rounding out the Knights' top four scores were Rachel Lawless (82) and Emily Mick (83).

"I'm very pleased to see the girls break 320 twice in one week," said Hamann, whose team shot 318 in Monday's Early Bird at Fox Run. "It's something to be very excited about. What is happening on the course is a direct result of what is happening in practice."

Prospect's "A" team was led by Noreen Caporusso (85), Quinn Blackshere (92), Jenny Geraghty (93) and Sarah Scaccia (95).

Stevenson sophomore Stephanie Miller (75) took second place in the individual competition, behind New Trier's Kristen Wright (74).

Miller, whose career best high school score is 71, was playing the Mount Prospect course for the first time.

"My round could have been better," said Miller, who had 3 double bogeys and a pair of 3-putt holes. She also had 3 birdies.

Fremd 174, Vernon Hills 197: Fremd's Madison Zyer earned medalist honors with a 39 while Angie Kim had a 43 and Christiana Kim 44.
