Would-be GM plant buyer says offer misconstrued

INDIANAPOLIS -- A businessman who hopes to buy a General Motors stamping plant in Indianapolis says he's offering higher wages than union representatives say.

President Justin Norman of Addison-based JD Norman Industries held a news conference in Indianapolis on Wednesday at which he asked members of the United Auto Workers to allow a vote on his offer.

Union leaders have said his offer cuts base wages of $29 an hour nearly in half. They say they'd rather let GM close the plant next year as scheduled and exercise their contract rights to transfer to another GM plant.

Norman says wages would vary by seniority and job description and that 40 percent of workers would earn more than $24 an hour.
