Enjoy end-of-summer nature outings
The McHenry County Conservation District offers these end-of-summer outings. Preregistration is required. Twilight Zone: Join a hike to learn more about twilight and all of its magic from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 19, Brookdale Conservation Area, 18410 Route 14, Woodstock. As the sun goes down, Brookdale comes alive with the sights and sounds of nature. Some animals will be preparing to bed down for the night - others will be just waking up. Fee is $2 for nonresidents and free for county residents. Adults and families are welcome.
LEED Gold: The McHenry County Conservation District made the decision to pursue LEED certification during the renovation of the new Lost Valley Visitor Center at Glacial Park. What does that mean and why did they do it? Join them for the answers to these questions and more during a special guided tour of the new "green" facility from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 25, at Lost Valley Visitor Center-Glacial Park Conservation Area, 6316 Harts Road, Ringwood. Fee is $6 for nonresidents and free for county residents. This outing is for adults age 14 and older.
Training: Friends of the Fox River Monitoring Network Training is scheduled from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 28 at Prairieview Education Center, 2112 Behan Road, Crystal Lake. This training provides individuals with background information on the Fox River, hands-on monitoring training and a Fox River Monitoring Guide. Participants collect physical, biological and chemical data that can be used to assess water quality. The morning portion of the workshop will be held indoors, followed by field work at a local stream in the afternoon. No prior experience is necessary.
