Muskat find the mark
Talk about breaking fast from the starting gate.
In her first action of the prep season, senior Kelly Muskat fired one of the finest rounds in Barrington girls golf history when she finished second in the Barrington Invite on Tuesday at Bonnie Dundee Golf Club in Carpentersville.
Muskat shot a 72, just 1 stroke behind Hampshire's Connie Ellett's tourney-best 71.
Muskat's score was also 1 stroke shy of the 71 shot by former Barrington standout Pam Buff at Schaumburg golf course in 1996.
"My drives made my day as I hit many of them 250 yards," said Muskat, a tri-captain who also plays on Babbi Barreiro's Fillies varsity basketball team. "My long drive set me up for an eagle on the fifth hole.
"It was a lot of fun to be back out there with the team after playing solo all summer. I am excited to be back and looking forward to a great year."
It took two birdies by Ellett on the last two holes to record her 71 and edge Muskat by 1 stroke.
"And Kelly just missed a 4-to-5 footer for a 71," said Fillies veteran coach Jodi Schoeck. "Kelly had a fantastic round. Oh my gosh, unbelievable."
St. Charles won the 17-team event with a score of 326, followed by Highland Park (327), Rockford Boylan (332), Hampshire (335) and Barrington (339).
Fillies tri-captain Casey Hahn took 14th place with an 83.
"Shooting a 339 is almost where I thought we would be," Schoeck said. "I was hoping to be in the top five.
"We have two girls who haven't even played varsity golf. It was a good start for everyone."
Stevenson 174, Buffalo Grove 185: Buffalo Grove sophomore Grace Kill was the medalist with a 37 for the Bison at the Buffalo Grove Golf Course. She was followed by teammates senior KC Dunne (44), freshman Amber Guiao (48) and senior Ashley McGill (56).
St. Viator 187, Hersey 210: St. Viator won the dual meet at Old Orchard Country Club in Mt. Prospect as three Lions scored under 50. Top scorer for Hersey was senior Megan Rogowski with a 46.
Prospect 340, Loyola 348: Coming off an impressive win (318) in Conant's Early Bird Invite at Fox Run on Monday, Prospect won its first dual meet this season at the Glencoe Golf Club.
Knights senior Kelly Lawless earned medalist honors with an 82.
Prospect hosts its own invite today at the Mt. Prospect Golf Course.
