Don't invest in 'safety' trap, Roselle

I have been a Roselle resident my entire life and hold this town close to my heart. However, I am quite dismayed at the decision our town has made to install cameras at intersections deemed dangerous and necessary to monitor for the "safety" of its residents.

I recently received a red light violation ticket at the intersection of Central and Rodenburg for $100. I take full responsibility for the infraction. I realize that I made a 3.5 second stop rather than the 4 second stop required for a right hand turn. The cameras make it very clear I was in the wrong, but ... $100, really?

Anyone familiar with this area clearly would agree that Central and Rodenburg is not Lake Street by any means. And if safety is the main concern, then why not a warning, or a $25 fine with the first infraction, increasing the consequence if the warning is not heeded.

I have read evidence that clearly states that cameras have not made a difference in safety whatsoever. Could this possibly be a money-making opportunity? As with many towns, I know we are financially struggling. As a responsible resident, I choose to spend my money in this town any chance that I can, from hair cuts to grocery stores.

It would warm my heart if Roselle would make a stand for its residents, and decide not to invest in this expensive "safety" trap and take that money and put it to use in some other purposeful way for our community.
