Winfield Run to support preservation of Hedges Station

The Winfield Run may be marking it's 27th year this weekend, but even more important is what historic building in the town will benefit from the event.

Between 100 and 400 people are expected to participate in one of three races that will serve as a fundraiser for the transformation of Hedges Station - the oldest remaining depot in the state of Illinois - into a museum.

The all-ages event begins at 7:45 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 14, and features three routes: a one-mile run/walk, a 5K run/walk and a 10K run.

"We're just on the cusp of (Hedges Station) opening and we need to do some big things to make that happen," said Martha Ingram, a volunteer with the Winfield Historical Society, which is responsible for the new museum. "This is a major fundraiser."

Although restoration is nearly complete at the station, built in 1849, Ingram said money is still needed to pay for operating costs such as a curator, exhibits and furniture.

Winfield Historical Society members want to open the museum within the next few months, for at least one day a week.

But Ingram added that more money raised at the run will mean longer hours and more days the museum can be open.

"It's completely dependent on the weather," Ingram said about how much money might be raised at the race. "We just hope for a good crowd and nice weather."

The start and finish line for the races will be located west of Winfield Road, on Beecher Avenue. Registration at the event costs $25.

Prizes will be awarded to the first-place winners in all the races, and ribbons will be given to the top three in the 5K and 10K and to all participants in the one-mile.

"It's a lot of fun," Ingram said. "Any age group, any ability level is welcome. There's something for everybody."
