Lake County briefs

Drowning victim identified:Officials have identified the 19-year-old man who drowned Wednesday in Lake Michigan off Illinois Beach State Park. Roman Bravo of North Chicago was swimming with friends at around 6:30 p.m. when he was pulled under. When firefighters found Bravo about 7 p.m. he had a slight pulse, but was pronounced dead shortly after at Vista Medical Center East in Waukegan. The drowning is the 10th in the past two years at the beach, with the last occurring June 25. The beach had no lifeguards on duty at the time of the drowning. Lake County Coroner Dr. Richard Keller said alcohol was not involved in the accident.Fireworks funded:Some officials expressed concerns earlier this year, but Island Lake Trustee Connie Mascillino this week said the village successfully raised enough money to pay the $14,500 bill for the recent fireworks show. Organizers wound up with a $1,408 surplus that will help pay for next year's show, she said. A car wash, an auction, a pizza party, a raffle and other methods were used to collect the money for the show. Direct donations were accepted, too.Chicago cop arrested:A Chicago police officer was arrested Wednesday night after scuffling with a Waukegan police officer in the northern suburb, authorities said. Tiffany S. Gaji, 23, of the 5100 block of South Michigan Avenue, Chicago, was charged with criminal trespass to property, aggravated battery to a peace officer and resisting a peace officer. The confrontation occurred at Chicago Auto Auction, 2731 Belvidere Road. The Waukegan officer involved in the altercation suffered minor injuries and was taken to a hospital, Waukegan police Lt. Edward Fitzgerald said. Gaji, who was not hurt, was released on bond Thursday. The Chicago police internal affairs division is investigating, Fitzgerald said. No other details were available.
