District trustees bad idea for Winfield
Your article on the failed petition to elect Winfield village trustees by neighborhood - however small - does not present a full view of the subject. I know that people in the my own neighborhood do not share identical views on village issues and decisions, as they do not on politics in general, religious beliefs or the zeal of some of the petition-carriers, including at least two of whom lost the last election for village president and others who were replaced by the current board members.
The need to fix crumbling roads at a cost of $290,000 a mile, completing the underpass without use of village funds, getting town financial grants over $300,000 in the last three years from Central DuPage Hospital and seeking outside funds to encourage good downtown business development are not neighborhood issues, nor are the safe-routes-to-school grants, the bikeways plans, stormwater and public works issues.
No neighborhood trustee can get the village more than the village is now receiving - 3.1 cents for every dollar paid in property taxes. And what would a resident do if he disagrees with a neighborhood trustee, go to another neighborhood trustee?
The idea of regional trustees usually is reserved in other towns for populations in areas larger than the entire population of this village. I hope that village residents will see this proposal as a ploy for some people now out of office to gain one in future elections.
