Mundelein rubber duck race to raise money for scholarshps

Rubber duckies may make bath time lots of fun, but Mundelein Park and Recreation District officials hope they can help raise money for a good cause, too.

This Saturday, the park district will host its 4th annual charity rubber duck race at the Barefoot Bay aquatic center.

Proceeds will benefit the Mundelein Parks Foundation's scholarships, which allow people in financial need to enjoy park district programs and activities for free.

"We have had an increased need (from) people requesting scholarships for park district programs," district marketing specialist Mary Priller said. "The more we can get people to contribute, the more we can offer."

The race will begin at 2 p.m. at the center, 1461 N. Midlothian Road.

The small, patriotically painted ducks will race down a section of the center's 740-foot-long lazy river. Prizes, such as gift certificates to park district programs, will be awarded.

Ducks can be sponsored for $5. Sponsors get a free duck key chain.

Last year, about 50 ducks competed in the race. The event raised more than $500 for the foundation, Priller said.

The race is free to attend if you've paid general admission to get into Barefoot Bay. Single-day admission fees range from $3 to $9, depending on age and residency.
